You can reduce your VMware licensing bill with HPE Morpheus VM Essentials and its per-socket licensing instead of per-core.

HPE’s solution uses a KVM-based hypervisor that runs your VMware clusters and its own VMs from one interface.

Take a server with two sockets and 64 cores on each; VMware bills for all 128 cores. VM Essentials bills per socket, so packing more cores onto a socket doesn’t keep pushing the price up. Your savings come from that change.

How it works

HPE Morpheus VM Essentials has two components:

The HVM hypervisor is HPE’s KVM-based hypervisor that runs your VMs. Then there’s the VM Essentials manager, which runs the HVM and your VMware clusters.

These components work together, and you provision and manage everything with HPE, regardless of whether a VM is on HVM or on VMware. You get standalone software, and it runs on hardware you own.

Move workloads when you’re ready

Shifting VMs from VMware to HPE VM Essentials happens via a bulk migration tool, with selectable workloads.

How it works in practice:

  • HPE VM Essentials runs the hypervisors side by side — you can provision to HVM or VMware in one place.
  • It manages VMware clusters without touching them. You’ll connect your vCenter environments and manage them from one place.
  • Part of the offering includes HPE Zerto for disaster recovery, providing assurance for your change in strategy during migration.

The approach to take is migrating a portion of your workloads over to VM Essentials when VMware’s cost policies make running them excessive.

Where to go from here

HPE’s VM Essentials is an offering with greater cost and licensing controls over VMware. There’s a decent chance VMware’s licensing is becoming expensive if you’re running multiple workloads, so there are savings to be had.

Another benefit is integration with HPE’s infrastructure as a whole. To reference a few: HPE Private Cloud Business Edition and HPE Alletra Storage.

It also coexists with more than VMware. With the HPE Morpheus Enterprise upgrade, it manages Nutanix and OpenShift too.
